Homecoming 2023: A Spectacular Success!
|
|
|
Homecoming 2023 was a spirited weekend that bridged the past, present, and future of our beloved Academy in an incredible display of Erskine pride.
Events began on Friday with a pep rally featuring fall athletic teams which was then followed by JV soccer matches (both boys and girls). Soon after, the annual parade showcasing floats adorned with Erskine references made its way up Route 32 from the South China Fire Department. Our first-ever EA Rocks concert featuring alumni and current student performers topped off the night.
Saturday brought triumphs: Boys Varsity Soccer won 10-0, Girls Soccer 8-0, and Field Hockey 2-0. The Alumni Brunch on Saturday morning was a heartfelt gathering and a reminder that "once an Eagle, always an Eagle". On Saturday night, students celebrated at the Homecoming Dance by dancing the night away, forging memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you to our students, staff, alumni, and community supporters who made this Homecoming an unforgettable experience.

Senior Kaleb Brown's Eagle Project: Connecting Communities and Saving Lives
In the heart of Palermo, senior Kaleb Brown has made a significant impact on the surrounding community with his ambitious Eagle Scout project. Kaleb, a member of Palermo Troop 222, took on a project that showcased his dedication and filled an essential need in the area.
Kaleb's journey with this project began at age 15 when a close friend was involved in a car accident. Due to the nature of his injuries, the young man unfortunately passed away enroute to the hospital. As a result of this experience, Kaleb realized that time can often be an critical factor in saving lives and began to recognize the need for a helipad to provide an area for emergency helicopters to land in the area. Initially an Eagle project conceptualized by fellow senior RJ Nelson, who aged out of the Boy Scouts before he could complete the project, Kaleb decided to step in to see the project to fruition.
After speaking with local LifeFlight pilot Michael Choate, who shared valuable insight about the parameters and logistics necessary for the helipad to serve its purpose effectively, Kaleb began to raise funds and gather resources. Through his relentless efforts and the generous support of many in the community, $20,000 was secured to fund the project. Several local businesses played a crucial role in the project's success, contributing construction time and materials such as gravel and concrete, signage, posts, and paint. Nearly 500 hours were invested in the project, ensuring the helipad met the highest safety standards.
Located on the Turner Ridge Road, near the Palermo Ball Fields, the helipad is strategically placed to provide quick access to medical facilities when every second counts. This helipad will fill a critical gap, serving as the only landing zone between Augusta and Belfast and spanning a distance of 45 miles.
Congratulations to Kaleb Brown and Palermo Troop 222 for their remarkable achievement. May this helipad serve as a symbol of hope, unity, and resilience for years to come.

Erskine Hosts The Summit Project Honor Case
Erskine Academy is pleased to host The Summit Project's prestigious Honor Case, a traveling military memorial dedicated to Maine's post-9/11 heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in active duty. This poignant exhibit features twenty Tribute Stones, each representing an extraordinary hero from Maine. Erskine Academy students and staff have taken on the solemn duty of "standing watch" over these heroes, ensuring their stories and sacrifices are never forgotten. The Honor Case will be displayed in the EA library until early December.
A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Honor Case took place during the Homecoming festivities on Saturday, September 30th. Those in attendance shared heartfelt stories about some of the heroes featured in the Case, including Army Spc. Thomas J. Dostie, an Erskine Academy alumnus from the Class of 2002.
Social Studies Instructor Kelly Clark has organized an educational component and a meaningful hike as part of hosting the Honor Case. On October 19th, twenty students from Erskine Academy will embark on a hike up the nature trails in Camden Hills State Park. The journey will culminate in a ceremony on Mount Battie, where each student will honor their chosen hero by recounting their story. Following this experience, students will express their gratitude and respect by writing letters to the family members of the fallen heroes.
Erskine Academy deeply values the opportunity to host this tribute, and we are committed to honoring the legacies of these brave individuals who have given their all in service to our country. We encourage everyone to visit the Honor Case in our library and take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by these courageous heroes.
